Armani Shabazz, 26, had the gun in his coat when officers brought him inside the Egeler Reception and Guidance Center near Jackson, typically the first stop for people entering the state prison system, records show.
It’s not clear why the gun wasn’t discovered earlier. Records do not indicate if Shabazz was arrested and transported to Egeler by Corrections Department staff or another police agency, the Free Press reported.
“Staff at the facility are trained to identify contraband and responded appropriately once the item was discovered,” department spokeswoman Brianna Brugel. “The incident in question is currently being investigated and therefore we cannot comment further at this time.”
