After the state government declared mucormycosis (black fungus) as a notifiable disease, the district has confirmed its 30 cases so far.
Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said the district had received 30 cases of black fungus so far.
He said the cases of black fungus were reported in Covid survivors/patients due to irrational use of steroids or poor oro-nasal hygiene in hospitalised patients and use of same mask for prolonged periods was also becoming a cause for mucormycosis.
“People should not indulge in self-medication and take medicine only after consulting a doctor. It is advisable to use oxygen cylinder only under expert advice,” the DC said.

LUDHIANA: The orders of Ludhiana deputy commissioner to allow shops to operate till 1p, and food outlets to make deliveries till 8pm are being hailed by businessmen. Punjab Traders Board too has welcomed the decision and claimed that it would help the shopkeepers and especially the food outlet owners.
“Today much needed relief has been given to the restaurants, food outlets, cafes and essential, non-essential shops. According to the new order of the DC Ludhiana, now all the shops can be opened from 5am to 1pm. In this way, the opening time of shops has been increased by one hour, which was being demanded by the shopkeepers. Along with this food outlets, restaurants have been allowed for home delivery of food till 8pm, which is a commendable step,” said Bhupinder Basant, senior vice chairman of Punjab Traders Board said.

LUDHIANA: The district has reported 30 cases of mucormycosis, also known as black fungus infection, deputy commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said on Friday.
Sharma said that there was no need to panic about the infection as the disease is curable.
Sharma said that all the 30 patients are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.
He said the state government has already declared the infection an epidemic and the disease is not new.
Meanwhile, considering a dip in new Covid-19 cases, the DC extended operational timing for non-essential shops and private offices by one hour from 5am to 1pm during the curfew hours from Monday to Friday.

Ludhiana, May 14
A man and five children drowned in a pond near Sahnewal village in Ludhiana, district officials said.
Four of the five children were siblings. The children had gone for a swim, but got stuck in a swamp, officials said. The man was a resident of the village who jumped in to rescue them but died officials said.
Rescuers have fished out the bodies of four of the five children. Search continues for the bodies of the fifth child and the villager.
