Yolanda Guerrero, a taquera with mostly silver hair neatly pulled back and covered by a hairnet, is standing in the doorway of her East Austin taco trailer, Tacos Guerrero. She’s recounting how she got into the food business. In the 1990s, Guerrero beat a hundred other competitors in a cooking contest in her native Monterrey, Mexico. Her winning array of dishes included fluffy, orangey-red rice, chiles rellenos, and half a cabrito (milk-fed kid goat). Guerrero worked at restaurants and cleaned houses and food trucks before her son bought her a trailer in 2016. “You don’t need to work for anyone else anymore,” she remembers him saying proudly.
Before the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and lockdown restrictions, Austin tourism was at an all-time high. Hotel occupancy rates are still seeing low numbers, after dropping around 40% in 2020. So, much like Austin s bars and restaurants, hotels need local support more than ever.
And since traveling out of state still isn t advised by the Centers for Disease Control, a staycation is one way to disrupt the monotony and manifest a change of scenery while stimulating the local economy.

Hedgehog Brewing features a wide range of brews, including easy-drinking hazy IPAs, hearty stouts, and wild-fermented farmhouse ales. Though the brewery is looking to fill a vacancy for an onsite food truck for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, Hedgehog currently offers occasional food service from Austin-based fried-chicken trailer Yaadbird, and also allows customers to bring their own food on days with no onsite food tuck option.
