Washington-area hospitality union Unite Here Local 25 and several local activist groups are putting pressure on D.C. hotels to temporarily close ahead of Inauguration Day next week, warning of an imminent threat to the safety of the city.
In a statement posted on Twitter Wednesday, John Boardman, executive secretary-treasurer of Local 25, called for all metro area D.C. hotels, except for those hosting members of the National Guard and other security personnel, to close immediately. Last week, we watched in horror as insurrectionists terrorized the District, putting our members, as well as the broader public, at risk of violence and exposure to Covid-19, Boardman said. Given the danger and fluidity of this situation, the best way to guarantee the safety of hotel workers and District residents is to keep these groups out of the city and out of its hotels.

D.C. activist groups are demanding that hotels close ahead of the inauguration on Jan. 20 as part of a “Don’t Host Hate” campaign in the aftermath of last week’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
ShutDownDC and Black Lives Matter D.C. rallied Thursday outside the Capital Hilton on 16th Street NW an area where several hotels are located. The activists are demanding that the hotels close through Jan. 21.
“We need our local businesses, our owners, to join us … and send this message to the Proud Boys and Trump who, once again, are planning to attack our hometown. We need local businesses to send that message, loud and clear!” Nee Nee Taylor, a BLM D.C. organizer, said in a statement.

WASHINGTON, DC Airbnb has canceled reservations in the DC metropolitan area during inauguration week and activists called on area hotels to do the same amid potential violence around the Jan. 20 inauguration.
Airbnb said in a statement the cancellation decision resulted from local, state and federal officials urging people not to travel to Washington, DC during inauguration week. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan released a joint statement urging residents not to travel to the event in person on Jan. 20. The leaders cited the Jan. 6 mob at the Capitol and the coronavirus in making their request. Airbnb said in the statement it was also aware of reports emerging yesterday afternoon regarding armed militias and known hate groups that are attempting to travel and disrupt the Inauguration.
