Dec. 21 (UPI) Virginia has taken back the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee statue it contributed to the National Statuary Hall Collection at the U.S. Capitol over 100 years ago.
Workers removed the statue of the Confederate commander of the Army of Northern Virginia overnight, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced in a statement Monday.

The confederate general had stood in the National Statuary Hall Collection at the U.S. Capitol, as one of two statues each state is entitled to display since 1909, 44 years after the Confederacy rebelled against the United States and was defeated. Lee s statue stood with Virginia s other contribution to the collection, a statute of America s first president George Washington, added the same year.

WASHINGTON, D.C. Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Virginia’s statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee was removed from the United States Capitol overnight. A representative from the governor’s office was present for the removal along with United States Senator Tim Kaine and Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton.
Each state is entitled to display two statues in the National Statuary Hall Collection, and for 111 years, the Confederate statue has stood along with America’s first president George Washington as Virginia’s contributions. The two statues were added in 1909, which was 44 years after the Confederacy rebelled against the United States and was defeated. The Lee statue had been one among 13 located in the Crypt of the Capitol, representing the 13 original colonies.

They took down “Marse Robert” from the National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol. Even though it’d been there for over 100 years, the statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee came down overnight Sunday to no fanfare, no whoops from the woke crowd. The only people to observe its removal were Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), VA Rep. Jennifer Wexton, and a representative from VA Gov. Ralph Northam’s office.
On the opposite side of the country, in California, Nancy Pelosi cheered the removal of the Lee statue in a statement:
