The Commission for Historical Statues has approved a full-scale clay model of Barbara Johns, a civil rights activist at a segregated high school in Prince Edward County. Pending approval by the state, the statue will later be cast in bronze and be moved into the U.S. Capitol.
A statue of Barbara Rose Johns, who as a 16-year-old girl played a pivotal role in the downfall of segregated schooling, will replace the Robert E. Lee statue, which had stood in the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall until 2020 as the representative of Virginia.
