The Kirby Family has been under attack for wanting to restore their beloved historic home at 369 Hawthorne Road. The litigators, whether directly or indirectly, are the Laguna Beach Historic Preservation Coalition, the Historic Architecture Alliance, and the leadership of Village Laguna. Because these litigious groups have refused to reach a compromise with the Kirbys, they are headed to court in the Fall. So after four years, and after being approved on every single requirement by various city bodies, including unanimous approval by City Council, construction is (best case) another year away.
To add insult to injury, the Kirbys have now received, anonymously, a hate letter. The letter is mean spirited, slanderous, pejorative and downright vile. It has disgusting language, false accusations and negative parenting advice. Is Village Laguna (VL) fooling everyone with a simple shell game in their lawsuit against the city and the Kirby family? Everyone keeps pointing to VL’s lawsuit division (same people, different name), the Laguna Beach Historic Preservation Coalition. But who is filing the lawsuit with them? The Historic Architecture Alliance (HAA). Who’s that?
No one seems to have noticed it’s a single-person organization consisting of the one neighbor who opposes the Kirby project the same neighbor who appealed the project to city council after the Design Review Board approved it. Then council approved it 5-0. Even long-time Village friend Toni Iseman voted in favor of the Kirby home.

Historic preservation efforts by the Laguna Beach Historic Preservation Coalition, a close affiliate of Village Laguna, and ardent preservationist Cathy Jurca go too far when they start to ruin the lives of families who are just trying to do the right thing.
In addition to suing the City in their attempt to derail the proposed new Historic Preservation Ordinance, this group, with Jurca’s support, has now filed suit against the Kirbys, a fine family of four with deep roots in Laguna. If successful, this suit could effectively kill the Kirby’s efforts to fully renovate and improve their Historic Register property in North Laguna. You heard it right.
