The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has collaborated with the private company Conservation Vision on their new project: Wild Harvest Initiative. That initiative looks at the full benefits of sustainable wild animal harvests nationally.
Sara DiRienzo, public affairs officer with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, said it is important for them to understand how wild harvested food contributes to the food system in Wyoming and what would happen if the amount of people harvesting food declined. One of the several effects of that would be less wild food available for people, said DiRienzo. So, that s something that we d like to learn more about and just about how wild food harvest fits in with a lot of food and security initiatives that were involved with.
Serving families with limited resources, the University of Wyoming Extension’s Cent$ible Nutrition Program (CNP) can help Wyomingites stretch precious dollars to obtain more nutritious food.
According to a UW Extension Office press release, CNP offers nutrition education classes and community intervention in an effort to help families in every Wyoming county and the Wind River Indian Reservation. CNP classes are free to anyone who meets household monthly and yearly income guidelines, and classes help participants manage budgets and make buying nutritious foods easier, said Mindy Meuli, CNP state director.
Adults can take an eight-lesson series focused on food resource management, general nutrition and food preparation. Children grades K-2 can participate in a lesson series, called Happy, Healthy Me; grades 3-5 participate in Grazing with Marty Moose, a five-lesson series; and the most recent curriculum, Real Kids, Real Skills, Real Meals, is for grades 5-8.
