Woodson, who is credited with creating the event that would evolve into the Black History Month we celebrate today.
Black History Month was designated in 1976 and has been recognized by every U.S. president in the month of February since. Woodson was a historian, whom with minister Jesse E. Moorland, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). It s known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). But the mission remains the same: to research, recognize and promote the achievements of Black Americans and those of African descent.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. When it was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964, it was a major victory for the civil rights movement in its battle against unjust Jim Crow laws that marginalized Black Americans. It took years of activism, courage, and the leadership of Civil Rights icons from Martin Luther King, Jr. to the Little Rock Nine to bring the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to fruition. These are eight key steps that ultimately led to the Act’s adoption.

Everything changed for the Jones family on April 14, 1997, when 21-year-old Malik Jones was brutally gunned down by East Haven, Conn., police officer Robert Flodquist. “I said very clearly when Malik was murdered, that but for racial profiling, Malik would be alive today,” Jones said in a conversation with
