Six people were taken to hospital.
The front passenger in the Volkswagen, which was also carrying two small children in the back, sustained what police described as “severe” and “life-altering” injuries.
The front passenger in the Honda suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital on a ventilator.
The investigation is still in the early stages, but police believe alcohol and speed are factors in the crash.
Police are looking for witnesses to the collision or for people who were in the area and have dashcam footage that might show the driving behaviour of either vehicle before the crash.
In particular, police are looking for a man who had a silver Dodge pickup truck in a nearby A&W parking lot, and a man and woman who were driving east on North Parallel Road in a white sedan.
