CHRISTIAN â People from across the region are mourning the loss of charity leader Priscella Cline Smith, who died Wednesday, April 21, after she was struck by a vehicle.
Cline Smith, along with her husband, Mike Smith, was owner of the Paradise Island campground at Christian, located along W.Va. 80 between Man and Gilbert. The two purchased the property in 1992. Every month over the past seven years, they have operated the Miracle Island Unlimited Food Pantry on the property with Cline Smith serving as executive director.
It is estimated the pantry has given out more than 145,000 food boxes, with an average of about 7,000 per month. On the third Wednesday of every month during distribution, vehicles often stretch out all the way onto W.Va. 80.
LOGAN â The Logan County Sheriffâs Department collected 131 pounds of unwanted drugs from three drug takeback events.
According to Sheriff P.D. Clemens, 23 pounds of unwanted drugs were collected during the first event in Chapmanville on Friday, April 16. The second takeback, held in Man on Friday, April 23, saw a 36 pound takeback, and the final event at the Fountain Place Mall on Saturday, April 24, saw 72 pounds returned.
Combined with the countyâs drug takeback boxes, 301 pounds of drugs were properly disposed.
The events were a first for Clemens, who took office as sheriff in January.
âWe thought weâd make it more convenient for the public to bring their drugs in,â Clemens said. âNot everybody can drive from Chapmanville to Logan, or Man to Logan, and we wanted to have them in three different locations just to make it more convenient for the public.â
The dates are:
Friday, April 16 â Tracy Vickers Community Center, 68 Boise St., Chapmanville
Friday, April 23 â Logan County Sheriffâs Dept. Man Station (Old 7/11), 110 S. Bridge St., Man
Saturday, April 24 â Walmart (Fountain Place Mall), Logan
All three events will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
âWe encourage everybody to bring their drugs that no longer are needed, or someone has passed away,â said Logan County Sheriff P.D. Clemens. âJust bring your drugs up, weâll take them.â
The drug takebacks are sponsored by the LCSD, PIECES Coalition and the Logan County Prevention Coalition.
