Cook County’s first jury trial after COVID-19 closures set for Monday, as defendant’s lawyer calls it ‘publicity stunt’ Megan Crepeau, Chicago Tribune
A gun case stemming from a 2019 arrest in South Shore is slated to be Cook County’s first pandemic-era jury trial, officials confirmed Tuesday, though the defendant’s own lawyer said he has serious concerns about the prospect.
Ronald Montgomery, 23, would be the first criminal defendant to face jurors at the Leighton Criminal Court Building in more than a year. Jury selection is scheduled for Monday morning before Judge Thaddeus Wilson.
But Montgomery’s attorney, Peter Lewis, told the Tribune he is extremely skeptical that enough potential jurors will even show up. The whole thing smacks of a “publicity stunt,” Lewis said in a phone interview Tuesday.
