This gallery talks about the river from both a historical perspective, and also about the river as a means of transportation and a big part of the economy. The gallery begins with a historical look at how the river was formed 15,000 years ago and about the people who lived here in prehistoric times. The kankakee torrent was a geological event 15,000 years ago. At the time, this was in a time of great glaciers. There was a glacier lake around what is now chicago and michigan. That glacial lake burst its dam. So most of the water would have come through the base or overthetop. And it rushed down the Illinois River valley, carving out a rock. Even people who are from illinois dont realize why there is a canyon like structure there. It was from the phenomenally powerful rush of glacial water coming down Central Illinois and carving out the canyons. The people who lived here, there are a number of different period we talk about. Children and the staff and we decided to be extra cautious. A war between gangs raised concernsraised it is less than 200 yds from where im standing now. I would have some concerns to for my children. Tensions or already dulles high given already is a socalled welcoming school with kids from underused buildings and other areas. The schools chief walked the safe passage route but with this recent shootings dulles administrators did not want children after school exposed to any possible violence. Wanted to make sure we have a safe and efficient dismissal that day. We asked the staff and children to be efficient in their leaving the school. This is the last day of the special security measures and School Officials and police decided it is safe again for kids to play and parents are relieved. Im glad they did and got the police out here protecting the kids. It is a good thing. The mayor hopes the bill the renovated apartment complex and a new school would open the doors to opportunity.
