The McGaffin family has a long association with Portrush Lifeboat with David’s late father Tom an integral part.
David explained: “The first marathon I took part in was Belfast on May 6, 1985, and it was in aid of the RNLI. There was a lot of blistering, some bleeding and an amount of distress so the fact that the race is always held on Mayday, which is also an international distress signal, is not lost on me.
A new volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager has been appointed at Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat Station.
Dr Christine O’Malley will now be responsible for managing all operational activities at the lifeboat station, as well as authorising the launch of the lifeboats. Christine has taken up the post following the retirement of Liam Maloney.
Christine is a graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She worked as a Consultant Geriatrician at Nenagh Hospital from 1993 until she took early retirement in 2017. Christine is a former President of the Irish Medical Organisation and has been a columnist with the Medical Independent since it was founded in 2010. She continues to write occasional columns on medical politics or living in the lakeshore village of Dromineer. For relaxation, Christine enjoys reading, attending to her garden, walking with her dog and recently she has returned to playing the piano.
