Community members are stopping by the San Luis Obispo Police Department to pay their respects for Detective Luca Benedetti.
Det. Benedetti died Monday when a commercial buglrary suspect shot at officers who were serving a search warrant at an apartment on Camellia Court.
Flowers, balloons, flags and other mementos surround the police station on Walnut St. When I saw on the news that he had passed away, my heart hurt. It ached. I was with a couple of friends and we decided he deserves for us to pay our respects, San Luis Obispo County resident Chloe Medlock said.

Santa Barbara police, county sheriff s officers and community members gathered at the police station Friday National Peace Officers Memorial Day to honor the local peace officers who have died in the line of duty.
Vigil, car cruise held in San Luis Obispo to honor fallen officers
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - San Luis Obispo community members and organizations participated in multiple events on Friday in memory of fallen police officers, including the San Luis Obispo Police detective who tragically died in a shooting on Monday.
Hundreds gathered outside Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo Friday night to honor the life of police detective Luca Benedetti.
Benedetti was shot and killed while serving a search warrant at an apartment complex on Camellia Court. Another officer was wounded during the crossfire and the shooter died at the scene.
Hundreds of people gathered Friday to honor the life and service of San Luis Obispo police officer Luca Benedetti, who died in the line of duty last week.
City of San Luis Obispo officials, in partnership with the Benedetti family, announced today that the funeral services for Det. Luca Benedetti have been arranged for next week. Community members who would like to show their support and pay their respects are encouraged to attend the processional.
“We have been overwhelmed by the public’s support,” said Police Chief Rick Scott. “It means so much to everyone who knew and cared for Luca. We know our community is hurting too, and we hope creating this opportunity to come together will help in the healing process.”
The funeral services will begin at the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center located at 1 Grand Ave in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, May 20 at 10 a.m., followed by a first responder procession to a private graveside service.
