Elizabeth Ruiz, a veteran radio icon in the San Antonio news scene, with 40 years of reporting behind her, has a new part-time gig.
This time, instead of interfacing through the invisible airwaves, she s in front of the camera as a fill-in anchor.
Ruiz debuted at KLRN last week. There, she ll be writing and reporting one minute news updates during the evening primetime spot, several days a week. I m excited about it, a big part of it is doing something new and different, and I m just proving to myself that I can learn something new you re never too old to learn something new, Ruiz tells MySA over the phone.
Since East San Jose was the hardest hit region in the county, Ruiz figured why not offer her space for vaccinations.
“It was really empowering to have the opportunity to partner with the county and Stanford Health and get on the other side of the problem and be part of the solution,” she said.
In the end, workers administered 85,000 doses there.
The public health department said Ruiz s willingness to open her doors was crucial in fighting the pandemic in this key demographic.
“It has been a great partnership and has definitely changed the life of many people here in our county especially in East San Jose,” said county spokesperson Ricardo Romero.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA Santa Clara County opened up a new COVID-19 mass vaccination site at the Aloha Roller Rink in Eastridge Mall in East San Jose on Friday.
In a partnership with Stanford Health Care, the county said it will be able to vaccinate up to 2,000 people a day at the site, which will operate seven days a week. East San Jose has been one of the hardest hit regions in the county by the pandemic, as it is home to many essential workers living in a densely populated area.

Local leaders said Santa Clara County is in a vaccine supply crisis, meaning there is sufficient capacity to provide vaccines, there is an overwhelming demand, but the state is not allocating enough vaccines to the county and East San Jose in particular.
This week, California Governor Gavin Newsom allocated 40% of vaccinations to be distributed to the state s lowest income residents. Ten Bay Area zip codes were identified, but none in Santa Clara County or East San Jose. So that means less for this zip code and we need our allocations, Esparza said.
