Getting the London area’s 22,000 Catholic students back into a normal groove this fall after two years interrupted by the pandemic is a top priority, says the incoming head of the separate school system.
Vince Romeo, 44, who takes over as the London District Catholic school board’s director of education Aug. 1, says his focus, assuming schools will be back to in-person learning, is doing whatever needs to be done to get kids back into the normal routine of education in nine secondary and 43 elementary schools.

LONDON, ONT. This could be an important week for parents, students and educators across Ontario, as they await word from the province on whether students will return to in-class learning before the end of the school year. If students do return, it won’t be as difficult as pulling them out of class said London parent Stacey Henry. “It’s harder to go from them being in school and being taken out. I think that makes more of a scramble.” Henry is a co-chair of the parent council at Stoney Creek Public School in London, where two of her children attend. She also has one child at a local Catholic high school, and another in day care.

A superintendent with the London District Catholic school board was named to the board’s top job on May 17.
Vince Romeo takes over as director of education on Aug. 1 after five years as superintendent of education for the board that has 22,000 students.

“It is an honour and blessing for me to continue the tradition here in the London District Catholic school board in this new role,” Romeo said at a virtual news conference.
“Please know I will work hand in hand with all of you to lead our vibrant Catholic education system into the future,” he told principals and other board staff who watched the announcement online.
