LONDON, ONT. More than half of the principals across Ontario, from all school boards, are reporting levels of stress that are not manageable, according to a new survey. The survey, conducted by People for Education asked principals across the province and all teaching models (in person, hybrid and virtual) how they were dealing with stress during the pandemic. Annie Kidder, the executive director for People for Education says they survey educators every year, but this year they wanted to specifically find out how administrators were faring. “How they were doing? How they ranked the major issues or challenges they were dealing with.”

In eight years as head of the London District Catholic school board, education director Linda Staudt tackled a $6-million deficit and declining enrolment, before taking on COVID-19.
She announced her retirement on Jan. 26.

“My original plan was to retire next year. Then COVID came. This is just the natural time in terms of ending this part and getting the board successfully through this,” said Staudt. “With the vaccine, there is a reasonable chance that next year will be that more normal year.”
The students are also being steered to a recently opened central registration point at https://www.ldcsb.ca to begin the process. In other years a student would register directly at their new school, said education director Linda Staudt.
In preparation for summer school last year during the pandemic, the process was made into a virtual experience “for all students.”
“Because families now can’t come into our schools they are able now to come into our website. There’s a form there that enables us to gather all the information,” Staudt said.
“Because it’s new, we put out a video. The video will take the parent through all of the various steps, so it really is one-stop shopping for families.”
