The sight of an officer holding his knee on George Floyd s neck for more than nine minutes until he died from asphyxiation triggered nationwide protests in 2020.
It wasn t the first time there was national outrage about a Black American being killed by police (see: Stephon Clark, Philando Castile, Freddie Gray, the list goes on).
But it
was the first time that the talk of police reform moved beyond incremental steps to include widespread, mainstreamdiscussions about foundational change.

Suddenly, officials were talking about ideas once considered beyond the pale like defunding police departments and ending qualified immunity for officers.

On Tuesday, the jury found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty in the death of George Floyd. Chauvin was deemed guilty on all three charges: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
The verdict was met with tears and relief but also caution across LA and the country.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A 31-year-veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department has died of COVID-19 complications, becoming the seventh sworn employee to die of the virus, officials announced.
Sgt. Anthony White, who had worked for the LAPD since 1990, died Thursday at age 54. His most recent assignment was at the Transit Services Division. Before that, he worked at the Hollenbeck, Southwest, Internal Affairs and Transit Services divisions, according to the Los Angeles Police Protective League s Dustin DeRollo.
He leaves behind a wife, two teenage children, his parents and two sisters, DeRollo said.
``Our deepest condolences to his friends and loved ones in this most difficult time, the LAPD said in a Twitter post.
