West Pittston chapter of Salvation Army to close after 109 years, merge with Wilkes-Barre

After 109 years, the Salvation Army is closing its West Pittston branch and merging with its Wilkes-Barre chapter. The organization’s building on Luzerne Avenue was demolished in March and the charity has been operating out of a temporary rented location in Pittston City. “We no longer have a building,” said Major Edgar George Jr., the Salvation Army’s general secretary based in Philadelphia. “From a financial standpoint, it makes sense to consolidate.” George promised the residents previously served by the Salvation Army could expect the same level of services since the combined headquarters in Wilkes-Barre is only several miles away.
