February 24, 2021 | By Kate McLane The Maryland State Education Association (MSEA) honored Eric Hines, M.Ed.’22, with the Minority Recognition Award in the public education category. The award, which was given at the MSEA’s 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration, recognizes an individual who demonstrates evidence of the improvement of education in the State of Maryland.
“The faculty at Loyola University Maryland are proud that one of our current master’s students, Eric Hines, has received the Maryland State Education Association Minority Recognition Award, an award that aligns with the School of Education’s vision for inclusive education and social justice,” said Joshua S. George, Miles & Buhr LLC announced the promotion of Andrew J. Lyons Jr., PE, to vice president and senior project manager. GMB also announced Lyons as the firm’s new owner.
Lyons began his career with GMB’s Seaford office in 2003 after earning a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware. In his nearly 18-year career, he emerged as a leader in the civil and municipal engineering group. Lyons will now manage the Seaford office operations.
Lyons has expertise in municipal street and utility restoration, ADA design, sewer and water systems, wastewater treatment, storm drainage and storm sewers, site design and highway entrance design. He is also experienced in construction inspection, having served as resident project representative for upgrades at Pocomoke City, Md.’s wastewater treatment plant.

A graduate of South Laurel High School is reaching new heights becoming a member of the newest branch of the United States military, the United States Space Force. This week Eric Merriss joined the military branch, something his mom, Sandra Russell, says is a big accomplishment for the kid who always had a love for space. After several years in the United States Air Force working with cyberspace technology he is moving on to become a Space Force Guardian. Russell says it all started right in Laurel County as he was a member of the South Laurel High School JROTC. The United States Space Force was created in December of 2019 but does not yet have a headquarters location.
Havre debater just misses state medal
Press release A Havre High School debater just missed advancing to single-elimination quarterfinals in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and earning a state medal, and potentially a first-place rank, in a heartbreaking finish at the online Class A state speech, drama and debate tournament over the weekend. Senior LillieAnn Mecklenburg, a four-year Blue Pony debater, went 3-2 at the state tournament and ended with a total of 138 speaker points, two points short of breaking into the single-elimination outrounds, and finished in ninth place. “It was too bad how things played out this weekend for all of our debaters,” Head Coach Tim Leeds said. “Lillie was so close, and worked so hard all year and for the past three years, to miss by just that much is too bad.
