Havre debater just misses state medal
Press release A Havre High School debater just missed advancing to single-elimination quarterfinals in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and earning a state medal, and potentially a first-place rank, in a heartbreaking finish at the online Class A state speech, drama and debate tournament over the weekend. Senior LillieAnn Mecklenburg, a four-year Blue Pony debater, went 3-2 at the state tournament and ended with a total of 138 speaker points, two points short of breaking into the single-elimination outrounds, and finished in ninth place. “It was too bad how things played out this weekend for all of our debaters,” Head Coach Tim Leeds said. “Lillie was so close, and worked so hard all year and for the past three years, to miss by just that much is too bad.
Havre speakers take fourth, seventh in online tournament
Press release Havre High School again fielded a small team for online competition over the weekend, but saw success at the tournament hosted by Custer County District High School in Miles City. Juniors Dartanion Kaftan and Riley Klein, competing at just their second tournament together, went 3-1 in preliminary rounds and just missed the cut to debate it out for first and second in the finals round. Kaftan, a third-year Havre competitor, and Klein, competing for the Blue Ponies in his first year, were not able to compete at the last two tournaments. Coming back to competition, the team lo.
Havre debater takes fourth at online tournament
Press release Havre High School speech and debate again saw success at an online tournament, the third of the year and hosted last weekend by Havre. Varsity fourth-year Lincoln-Douglas debater LillieAnn Mecklenburg, who went undefeated in preliminary rounds and lost in a split decision in finals to take second at the Dec. 11-12 Laurel tournament, again went undefeated in preliminary rounds. Mecklenburg swept debaters from East Helena, Park High School, Corvallis High School and Billings Central in the four preliminary rounds before losing on a split decision to a Laurel High School debat.
