August 3, 2021 Voters in Van Buren County had several issues to decide on Tuesday. At the top of the list was the big $53.6 million bond proposal for Paw Paw Public Schools. It was rejected by the voters. Meanwhile, voters for Lawrence Public Schools approved a $1.7 million bond for building improvements and new school buses. A road millage increase was approved in Lawrence Township. Voters in Paw Paw Township approved a $5.9 million bond for a new fire station, and a new parks millage was approved in the village of Paw Paw. In the South Haven mayoral race, Scott Smith and Ahmmad Goodwin will go on to the November election.

Local Elections Set For Tuesday

There will be a few proposals on the ballots of Van Buren County voters Tuesday. There’s a road millage increase on the ballot in Lawrence Township. In Paw Paw Township, voters are being asked to approve a $5.9 million bond for a new fire station. Voters in Lawrence Public Schools are asked to approve a $1.7 million bond for building improvements and new school buses. There’s a new parks millage on the ballot in the village of Paw Paw, and the biggest question to appear on the ballot is for Paw Paw Public Schools. Voters are considering a $53.6 million bond proposal for building improvements. A city commission post and the office of mayor are on the primary ballot in South Haven.

(Noah Taborda/Kansas Reflector) TOPEKA A panel focused on promoting racial equity in Kansas has homed in on child care and early childhood education as keys to addressing economic and social disparities among marginalized communities in the state. The Governor’s Commission on Racial Equity and Justice chose to focus work done by its three subcommittees on addressing the social determinants of health the social and economic factors impacting group differences in health and their role in racial injustice in Kansas. Each subcommittee raised inadequate access to child care or the need to enhance the workforce as a point of interest.

Mass. reports 572 new coronavirus cases among public school students, 48 among school staff members

Ryan/Globe Staff Local school officials in Massachusetts reported to the state 572 new coronavirus cases among students and 48 among school staff members for the week that ended Wednesday. The number of cases reported among staff members was at its lowest single-week level since late September. The state K-12 education agency estimates that about 690,000 students across the state are attending some form of in-person learning, and about 135,000 staff members are working in buildings, the same as the previous week. Cases are only reported among students who are attending in-person school; cases among students in a fully remote learning model are not being tracked by the state. Cases among staff members are only being reported if the employee was inside a school building within the seven days prior to the reported case.
