In a puzzling trend, 16.4% more Lancaster County residents filed new claims for unemployment benefits last week, new data shows.Â
The number of new claims jumped to 744, according to the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board. Itâs the highest weekly number of new claims here since mid-July.Â
However, state Department of Labor & Industry spokeswoman Sarah DeSantis cautioned against drawing conclusions about unemployment in the county based on so little data. âThe data set for a Lancaster County is small enough to be susceptible to volatility,â she said.Â
DeSantis also raised the possibility that upticks in new claims here might be fueled to some degree by increases in fraudulent new claims, which have occurred statewide. She cited no specifics about alleged wrongdoing.Â
New claims for unemployment benefits filed by Lancaster Countians dropped 7.5% last week but remained elevated by fresh filings from already unemployed people whoâve exhausted their first round of benefits, new data shows.
The drop to 616 new claims from 666 new claims the prior week ended a string of three consecutive weekly increases, according to figures released Thursday by the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board.
But despite the decline, the number of new claims is roughly double the volume seen a month earlier.
The reason, according to the board, is that hundreds of people who were laid off when the pandemic began in March 2020 and now are seeing their year of benefits ending are filing new claims.
Nearly 18% more Lancaster Countians filed new claims for unemployment compensation last week, new data released Thursday shows, rising for the third straight week to 666 new claims.
