Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce Announces Small and Large Business of the Year Award Recipients June 28, 2021 The Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce named the 2020 Small and Large Business Award Recipients at the June Membership Luncheon.   The Houma Chamber usually honors award recipients at the organization’s Annual Banquet; however, the 2021 Annual Banquet was canceled due to COVID. The organization still recognized the 2020 businesses of the year.   The awards are given to businesses that have demonstrated ethical leadership, corporate stewardship, those who have made a difference in their communities and have contributed to the advancement of economic and social goals.    The small business of the year award is given to a business that has 25 or fewer full-time employees. Lafourche School Board to consider one-time stipend for teachers Teachers in Lafourche public schools could see a bigger paycheck next month if the School Board approves a proposed $1,000 stipend.   The Lafourche Parish School Board is set to vote on the measure Wednesday which would give the district’s 900 teachers a one-time $1,000 payment in May. The measure was already approved by the district’s Finance Committee.  Superintendent Jarod Martin said it isn’t the first time that teachers have been given a stipend, but this one comes at a time when it is needed the most.  “We’ve been able to manage in-person learning, virtual learning and hybrid learning from the start of the school year during a year when many school districts couldn’t even get off the ground in terms of providing any kind of quality instruction to the kids,” he said. “Our teachers in Lafourche Parish have been able to offer in-person learning that was uninterrupted for the most part. Area teachers eligible for COVID-19 vaccine, but doses are limited

Though teachers in Terrebonne and Lafourche are now eligible for a coronavirus vaccine, getting large numbers of teachers inoculated isn’t going to be a quick process, officials said.  As of Monday, teachers, school-support and daycare staff have been given the green light to get the COVID-19 vaccine.  Teachers, school support staff and daycare employees have played a critical role throughout this pandemic and their safety is important to our continued recovery, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Monday. Thanks to continued increases in the availability of vaccine doses to the state of Louisiana from our federal partners, I am confident that now is the right time to continue to expand eligibility.
