Lubbock fire officials investigate string of blazes as possible arson
A string of fires in central and south Lubbock going back to last week - including one that displaced 10 people from an apartment building - are being investigated as potential cases of arson, the Lubbock Fire Marshal s Office announced Wednesday.
In total, Lubbock fire officials listed nine locations where arson is suspected in fires April 26 and May 4 around the city, and they are asking for the public s help to clear potential fuel sources and to provide more information about who may be behind the blazes. All of these fires appear to be related and intentionally set, reads a statement from Lubbock Fire Rescue. But officials by late Wednesday had not released additional details about how the fires may have been set or other factors.
A Lubbock police honor guard joined in with counterparts from across the state in a ceremony dedicated to honoring fallen LPD Officer Nicholas Reyna and the other Texas peace officers killed in the line of duty the last two years.
Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick were among state leaders who delivered remarks at the 2021 Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony in Austin. Today, we gather to honor Texas law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, Abbott said. These courageous men and women gave their lives so that we may be safe, and we are eternally grateful for their service and sacrifice. The Texas Peace Officers Memorial is more than a structure on the Capitol Grounds, it is a solemn reminder of the lives that were taken too soon. May we always remember these men and women who gave their lives in service to their fellow Texans.
