Work is progressing on this project of national importance to install new dual function lock gates on the Thames Estuary in Tilbury.
The £34 million scheme is a project between the Environment Agency and the Port of Tilbury that will better protect thousands of homes and businesses in the local area from flooding.
UK Paper Hub secures return of SCA as major new customer at Tilbury
SCA, Europe’s largest private forest owner and producer of wood products, packaging paper, pulp and renewable energy, will return on a long-term deal to market leading UK Paper Hub located at London’s major port, the Port of Tilbury. The 50-acre facility on the Thames will become SCA’s primary UK logistics hub for the import of packaging materials to supply their UK customers.
Sweden based SCA, are a major European logistics supplier – calling at terminals including Umea, Sundsvall, Helsingborg, Oxelösund, Malmo, Iggesund and Kiel – and will see substantial volumes of packaging paper and other third-party cargoes regularly transported by their own Ro-Ro vessels from Sweden to the UK Paper Hubs’ dedicated berths.

New flood defence gates for Port of Tilbury in £34 million scheme
Construction work has started on an innovative scheme to improve Tilbury’s flood defences with the installation of new dual function flood lock gates.

In a project of national importance, the existing port lock gates will be replaced with pioneering dual function lock gates, and the Environment Agency’s tidal barrier will be removed.
This is a major joint project between the Environment Agency and The Port of Tilbury that will safeguard thousands of homes and businesses in the local area.

P&O Ferries has added an additional freight ferry vessel to the route to cope with demand.
The new terminal uses the latest booking and border technology and streamlined customs procedures through AEO trusted trader status.
