11-year-old honored for helping family escape fire
An 11-year-old Douglas County boy was honored by the fire department for helping a family of four from a burning home.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. - The Douglas County Fire Department honored an 11-year-old boy Thursday for his part in helping four of his family members escape from a devastating fire earlier this month. If he wasn t 11 years old, I would hire him on the spot, said Douglas Co. Fire Chief Roderick Jolivette.
Chief Jolivette presented Calil Gillis with a citizen award for his quick thinking. It started getting hotter and hotter in my room and I woke up to see what was going on and turn the AC on, Gillis recalled. So, when I woke up, [there] was white smoke coming out the vents.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. Authorities say crews have recovered the body of a victim following a deadly house fire on Sunday morning in Douglas County.
County spokesperson Rick Martin announced the fire and death of a 46-year-old man on Monday. Martin said that crews were called to the 3100 block of Christy Ridge Drive after receiving calls of a house fire just before 5 a.m. Sunday.
AFD receives pallets of teddy bears from Georgia

AUSTIN, Texas - Sometimes a hug from a soft friendly face can help during a traumatic situation.
Thanks to a recent donation from Georgia, the Austin Fire Department will be able to offer just that to Austin-area kids.
AFD shared on Facebook that the Douglas County Fire/EMS Department in Georgia spent three weeks collecting new teddy bears for a program they called #BearHugsforTexas in an effort to show support to the children in Austin that were affected by Winter Storm Uri.

We love our firefighters! These are the most selfless human beings. The Douglas County Fire Department is perfect proof. They’re sending “BEAR HUGS” to Texas in a show of support .We’ve been relatively lucky here in Georgia in regard to winter weather. The same can’t be said for those in the Lone Star State.
New Douglas County Fire and EMS Chief Roderick Jolivette wanted to do something to bring smiles to the faces of the children in Texas. The goal was simply to make a child’s day. So he came up with a pretty simple plan to collect as many teddy bears as possible to ship to the children in Austin, Texas.
