Rochester appoints Tri-Town Against Racism director to School Committee

Aidan Pollard Jul 19, 2021 A selection committee comprising the Rochester Selectmen and School Committee members chose Jason Chisolm for the Rochester School Committee on July 19 ROCHESTER After a failure to elect a Rochester School Committee member in the May Town Election, a seven-person selection committee comprising the Selectmen and School Committee members appointed Jason Chisolm to the position on July 19. Chisholm is a father of two Rochester Memorial School students and the Executive Director of Tri-Town Against Racism. Chisholm will fill the seat left open after the May Town Election, which had no official candidates. There were a small number of write-in candidates for the position, but the results of the election ended in a tie between Michael Amato and Craig Parker with four votes each.

ORR superintendent releases annual progress report

Morgan Beard Jul 6, 2021 First year Superintendent Michael Nelson gave his first annual progress report on Tuesday, July 6 during the Old Rochester Regional School District Joint School Committee meeting. The report, which assessed the superintendent’s performance according to goals set out last year, was well received by the respective school committees of Marion, Mattapoisett, and Rochester. “Every step along the way he created for us a beautiful portrait of what his leadership could be,” said Sharon Hartley of the Rochester School Committee. “A great leader listens and acts on what he or she heard and that is what we’ve seen here.”

School district working toward in-person school for grades 3-6

Rochester Memorial student makes the New York Times

ROCHESTER Local 11-year-old Kelcey Robertson made the New York Times last week for his work fundraising for racially diverse books for his school’s library.  Robertson sold lettuce he was growing in his garden to buy the books, which he donated to Rochester Memorial School. “He and his mom set up a produce stand in his front yard, and he spent the day selling greens that he had picked and bagged from his family garden,” Rochester School Committee chair Sharon Hartley said at a March 4 meeting. “And at the end of the day he’d raised $700.”
