MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas junior Alexandra Emilianov broke the KU school record in the shot put, while the Jayhawks placed sixth individuals on the podium and advanced five to finals on day two of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Manhattan, Kansas on Saturday.
Among the Jayhawks making the podium were Emilianov (shot put), Toni Englund (heptathlon), Patrick Larrison (shot put), George Evans (shot put), Samantha Van Hoecke (pole vault) and Riley Cooney (3,000 meter steeplechase).
Emilianov’s school record is the second in as many competitions for her in the shot put, after initially setting the school record of 16.87m (55-2.25 ft.) at the Rock Chalk Classic on May 1. On Saturday, Emilianov broke her record on two different throws, with her biggest throw of 17.25m (56-7.25 ft.), placing her third overall.

AUSTIN, Texas – The Kansas men’s and women’s track and field teams opened its 2021 outdoor campaign at the Longhorn Invitational at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas on Saturday, marking the Jayhawks’ first appearance at an outdoor meet in 637 days.
Kansas last competed outdoors at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas from June 5-8, as the 2020 outdoor season was canceled. A group of Jayhawks competed on the same track on Saturday.
Senior Mariah Kuykendoll made her first appearance of 2021 on Saturday in the women’s 400 meters, where she wasted no time catching her rhythm. The senior ran a personal best 53.63 to win the event and become the No. 6 performer in KU outdoor history.

Saturday’s meet marks the first outdoor meet for KU in 637. days, since last competing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which was also held at Mike A Myers Stadium. The 2020 outdoor track & field season was canceled due to COVID-19.
