A Christchurch woman accused of killing her partner has been found fit to stand trial 23 April 2021
Former kitchen hand Rena Maloney has appeared in the High Court in Christchurch this morning.
The 55 year old denies murdering her partner Martin Berry in his Papanui home - and later burying him in the backyard.
Maloney did not speak during today s hearing and has been remanded in custody until her trial in March next year.

Justice Cameron Mander remanded Maloney in custody, and scheduled her trial for March 7, 2022. The judge said two health assessor s reports had confirmed Maloney s fitness to stand trial. Maloney, wearing a grey prison jumper, was silent during the appearance Berry was farewelled at a memorial service attended by more than 60 people in his hometown of Whanganui in January. Berry’s brother David and sister Joanna paid tribute to him at the memorial service.

A woman accused of killing her partner and burying him in the backyard of his north Christchurch home has been found fit to stand trial - but denies a charge of murder.

A woman accused of murdering her partner two weeks before his body was found buried in a makeshift grave will have a mental health assessment done before entering a plea. Rena Maloney, 55, appeared via video-link before Justice Cameron Mander in the High Court in Christchurch on Friday. Maloney is charged with the murder of Martin Berry, whose remains were discovered at a property he owned on Main North Rd, Papanui, last month. The body was discovered after a woman reportedly called police and told them he was buried there.
