After Governor Cuomo signed legislation that legalized recreational marijuana use across New York State, it’s up to individual towns to decide whether or how they will allow it to be sold in their jurisdictions and how. The Town of Riverhead recently announced that it is seeking public input on the issue from its residents. “Each town must decide to allow the sale of marijuana at specific locations and provide restrictions (setbacks) at use locations (cafes and lounges) or elect to opt-out of the legislation,” read a Riverhead Town press release. If a town opts out, then marijuana cannot be sold at retail businesses or consumed in cafes or lounges in that specific town.
Riverhead Town will not be selling one-day or seasonal beach passes to nonresidents this year, a practice it discontinued last year when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, according to Supervisor Yvette Aguiar.
But the Town Board still must decide if it plans to issue beach passes to hotels and lodgings for use by their guests.
A one-day nonresident pass had cost $35, according to parks and recreation superintendent Ray Coyne, while the annual nonresident permit was $200.
The board discussed hotel/motel permits at its work session last Thursday.
“This is something that in the past has been done, with the town is giving beach permits to local lodging facilities so they can pass them on to their customers who are staying here,” Councilman Tim Hubbard said.

According to a story in RoverhealdLocal.com, the Riverhead Town board approved a 2-day drag racing event at Calverton Enterprise Park. “The event will include eighth-mile, quarter-mile and half-mile races, Baxter told the board last week,” the news outlet reported. “The half-mile race would be on the 7,000-foot runway, while the eighth-mile, quarter-mile races would be on the 10,000-foot runway.” News 12 reported that Grumman property in Calverton could be the site of a more permanent drag strip, if gear heads have their way. Other sources said that the proposal would be temporary and allow for up to 14 races over several weeks at the site.
