The people of Rwanda first gained their independence from Belgium on the first of July in 1962 (UN, 2016). Since then, their nation has grown both economically and in population.They are one of the most highly populated areas in their region, but as the number of people increases, so does the tension between ethnicities.
About 85 percent of its population is Hutu. The rest of the population is Tutsi, along with a small number of Twa, a Pygmy group who were the original inhabitants of Rwanda. While they were part of German East Africa from 1894 to 1918, Rwanda came under the League of Nations mandate of Belgium after, along with neighboring Burundi, Rwanda s colonial period, during which the ruling Belgians favored the minority Tutsis
