Tholpavakoothu is believed to be more than 350 years old.
Performed in the Bhadrakali temples, from January to June every year, the shadow puppeteers of Kerala are busy performing the story of the Ramayana as part of the rituals during temple festivals.
Ramachandra Pulavar, son of the late guru KL Krishnankutty Pulavar, belongs to the 13th generation in a family of puppeteers. For him, this season of plays had an auspicious start, he has been awarded the Padma Shri. He is the first folk artiste from Kerala to be selected for this honour

Tholpavakkoothu presented by Padma Sri awardee Ramachandra Pulavar on Thursday
The penultimate day of the International Film Festival of Kerala’s (IFFK) Palakkad edition on Thursday witnessed a presentation of the traditional temple art form of tholpavakkoothu (shadow puppetry), which shares similarities with the art of cinema.
In fact, the IFFK had adopted an imagery from the temple art form as its logo. Cinema lovers who enjoyed the tholpavakoothu presentation said it was the “destiny” of the IFFK to be also held in Palakkad on its silver jubilee year.

The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) is going through a significant generational transition. The current editions of the IFFK, particularly the final one in Palakkad, are witness to this as more and more new-generation film lovers and filmmakers are involved in the festival, said Kerala State Chalachitra Academy secretary Ajoy Chandran.
