MORTON will face Airdrie in the play-off final after a dramatic last gasp moment of magic from Craig McGuffie saw them edge out Montrose at Cappielow tonight. Ton went into the game 2-1 down from the first leg and stormed out of the traps into an early two goal lead, only for the Angus men to pull one back and ultimately force extra time. It looked like the match was heading to penalties when an outrageous piece of skill from McGuffie settled things right at the death. Gus MacPherson sprang a few surprises as he rang the changes with his line-up, bringing in Chris Millar at right back as one of four alterations from Saturday s defeat at Links Park. Cameron Salkeld also came in from the cold to start up front.
MORTON S season of misery continued today as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Montrose to leave themselves on the brink of relegation. They got the first leg of their play-off semi-final off to the perfect start by taking an early lead. But they failed to build on it and were unable to cope with a strong second half comeback from the hosts at a windswept and rainy Links Park and now go into Tuesday s second leg at Cappielow with it all to do. The Greenock men began the game brightly and made the breakthrough with just five minutes played when Kalvin Orsi did well down the left and found Gary Oliver lurking inside the box.
THE trapdoor is threatening to open for Morton as they enter the final four games of the season in desperate need of points to stay in the Championship. A deeply damaging 4-1 defeat against Inverness in midweek has pushed them into the bottom two and they are now in grave danger of facing a relegation play-off at the least, unless they can turn things around and pick up a win or two over the next few weeks. Ayr and Arbroath are also in the mix, with Alloa adrift at the bottom, and it looks like it could well come down to Ton s two final fixtures, which are against The Wasps and the Red Lichties.
