Steelers could take a 10 Jets approach in replacing starters this year

Photo by Rob Tringali/SportsChrome/Getty Images The NFL’s salary cap is going to take a hard turn this offseason, and cap spending teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to get ripped apart because of it. With current projections of the salary cap sitting anywhere between 175 and 194 Million dollars in 2021, the Steelers could be in cap hell. There are ways for the Steelers to add some space by extending players, but even then the organization will need to let a large majority of their free agents walk. On the positive side, the Steelers should see a title wave of compensatory selections for the 2022 NFL Draft after letting those free agents go, and, to put a cherry on top, they currently have an NFL leading $172 million dollars in projected cap space in the 2022 offseason. Sure that number will drop as they extend players, like T.J. Watt, but the Steelers will have a ton of cash to sure up their future.

AWFUL PLAYOFF PERFORMANCE WILL JUMP-START OFFSEASON OF CHANGE

Defensive end Cam Heyward was at a loss for words after the game.   After starting 11-0, the Steelers staggered to the finish line, losing four of their last five games, and now they enter an offseason in which there will be many changes.  The team has a long list of unrestricted free agents and Big Ben has one year left on his contract, if he decides to come back and play and if the team decides it can afford to keep him. Among the big names who will become unrestricted free agents are Bud Dupree, James Conner, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Matt Feiler, Alejandro Villanueva, Tyson Alualu, Mike Hilton, Robert Spillane, Avery Williamson, and Cam Sutton.  Others on the list are Chris Wormley, Marcus Allen, Zach Banner, Jordan Dangerfield, Sean Davis, Cassius Marsh, Jordan Berry, Jarone Elliott, Danny Isadora, Jerald Hawkins, and Josh Dobbs.

Is your team s arrow pointed up entering these playoffs? A. I feel really good about the trajectory of our group and the fact our arrow is pointing up although our record may not reflect it. There have been some significant re-acquisitions here in recent weeks in terms of the guys available to us. I m excited about guys like Matt Feiler back in the lineup, guys like Robert Spillane back in the lineup, and that s what makes me optimistic about the general trajectory of our group.
