According to a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food insecurity at the national level remained unchanged between 2019 and 2020. In Central Texas, though, it's a different story. One in eight Texan households had trouble putting food on the table in 2020.

CENTRAL TEXAS â 25 News Feed the Need food drive comes to a close on Friday, which means there is still time to make a donation if you have not already. The dollar amount donated this year is lagging behind last year s total, but there may be a couple reasons behind that.
Summer is usually the most difficult time of year for food pantries to keep supplies flowing. It s what the executive director of The Shepherd s Heart, Robert Gager, calls a donation drought. We re at a point right now where this is our lowest time of income, our income is the lowest, and our food donations are lower than they ve ever been, said Gager.

WACO, TX â Due to dangerous road conditions, local food pantries have been closed all week. But some individuals in Waco are refusing to let the ice stop them from making sure those in our community never have to go hungry.
Every Thursday, Shepherdâs Heart Food Pantry has a food distribution from noon to 6 p.m. Despite the dangerous road conditions, Shepherdâs Heart opened their doors early Thursday morning to make sure everyone could receive food.

WACO, TX â The Shepherdâs Heart Toys from the Heart toy drive finished up today.
The Shepherdâs Heart Toys from the Heart toy drive gives 500 to 600 children in Waco the opportunity to receive toys and celebrate Christmas, but after a tough year and unemployment on the rise, the need is the greatest Robert Gager has seen in a long time.
âItâs been a difficult year, but honestly its been a generous year. I have seen before give, and I donât want to say they never gave before, but they were new donors to us and they really impressed us. Really impressed us, because of the need in the community and they said, âwe want to give to you,ââsaid Shepherd s Heart Executive Director, Robert Gager.
