MUMBAI: A deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and his assistant police constable from Parbhani were caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on late Friday for blackmailing, demanding and accepting a Rs 10 lakh bribe from a businessman.
A search of DSP Rajendra Pal’s house resulted in the recovery of unaccounted cash of Rs 24.84 lakh.
Pal (55) was serving as the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) at Selu, Parbhani. His accomplice, an assistant police constable, has been identified as Ganesh Chavan (37). Both have been booked under Prevention of Corruption Act and remanded to police custody.
According to the ACB, the complainant was blackmailed for an ‘objectionable’ phone call between him and a deceased friend’s wife. The recording of the phone call went viral. “The conversation was a bit objectionable. Pal called the complainant, threatened and demanded a sum of Rs 2 crore,’’ said an official.
