Birthday cakes, heroin dealers and a drugged cat: how The Serpent killer Charles Sobhraj escaped prison

Tahar Rahim as The Serpent in the new BBC drama Charles Sobhraj’s 42nd birthday was still three weeks off as he sped away from New Delhi’s sprawling Tihar Ashram prison in a white Hindustan Ambassador Car in March 1986. But the handsome and charming Frenchman had just received the greatest gift of all: a taste of freedom and, all going well, reprieve from a potential death sentence.  Sobhraj, the notoriously suave “The Serpent” serial killer and gem smuggler who killed travelers for their money and passports, and whose crimes are documented in the BBC thriller of the same name, was staging a jail-break like no other. In fact, it wasn’t really a jail break. The entire point was to be re-apprehended without delay and condemned to an even longer term behind bars.
