Snowpack update: How record-breaking snow helped Utah s snow totals get closer to average

SALT LAKE CITY Utah s ever-important snowpack, which got off on the wrong foot, is finally getting closer to average following several winter storms in a row and there s a little more on the way. None of the 16 Utah snowpack regions crossed 100%, or the baseline normal for Feb. 18, following the massive storm that broke records as it passed through Tuesday and Wednesday; however, some specific locations within those basins are now at or above-average levels, according to the Department of Agriculture s Natural Resources Conservation Service, which oversees snowpack totals. It s a valued statistic because most of the state s water which ends up going to agriculture or ordinary residential use comes from the snow that melts and ends up in the state s streams, rivers and reservoirs. This year s snowpack is arguably even more important because the state suffered its driest year on record last year.

Remote corner of Box Elder County produces state-record fish

Box Elder County, where dry desert mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake dominate much of the landscape, isn’t often thought of as a place to catch state record-caliber fish. However, the mountainous northwest corner of the state happens to be the only area in Utah where a certain subspecies of cutthroat trout can be found, making it the go-to location for anyone looking for Yellowstone cutthroat in the state. The Yellowstone cutthroat is native to the Snake River drainage, a watershed whose southern boundary encompasses the Raft River Mountains of Box Elder County. The fish can be found in a few streams draining off the north slope of this range, which reaches nearly 10,000 feet in elevation and contains the highest point in the county.
