Sumit Sharma, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering in Ohio University s Russ College of Engineering and Technology, was recently awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) five-year, $511,902 grant to study the adsorption behavior of surfactant, or soap-like, molecules on metallic nanoparticles.
The CAREER program gives the NSF s most prestigious awards to support early-career faculty who have shown potential to serve as academic role models in research and education as well as lead advances in the mission of their department. Ohio University is on track to welcome a larger freshman class this coming fall than the year prior, a first for the institution in recent years as fewer first-year students enrolling is said to be a source of the universityâs financial turmoil.
The number of freshmen enrolling at the university has steadily fallen each year since 2016âs near-record numbers, hitting in fall 2020Â amid the pandemic the lowest point since the â90s. Ohio University celebrated the Spring Class of 2021 this past weekend, April 30 – May 2. Graduates were welcomed to participate in person at Peden Stadium or virtually.
This weekend was extra special, as it marked the first time a commencement ceremony was ever held in Peden Stadium.
Our Graduate commencement ceremony was held on Friday at 9 a.m. to honor both master’s and doctoral degrees. The speaker for this ceremony was Dr. Susan Williams, a professor of anatomy in OHIO’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine who was named the 2020 Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award winner.

Dr. Srdjan Nesic, Russ Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, has been named the 2021 Distinguished Professor by Ohio University.
“Dr. Nesic is recognized as one of the world’s leading scholars in his field, and he is most deserving of the distinguished professor designation, Ohio University’s highest honor,” Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis said. “Srdjan’s scientific expertise has been cited globally, and his work and research, along with that of his current and former students, are making a tremendous impact in the world of corrosion science.”
