Ludhiana: Even as the daily Covid-19 cases are on the decline, the threat of third wave looms large. But the number of tests per million in the district has fallen below 2,000-mark, as per the recent health department report. The department, meanwhile, says that testing is being ramped up. According to the state health department data of July 30 evening, the number of tests per million in the district was 1,865. At 2,257 tests per million, Muktsar is at the top of the state chart, Jalandhar is second (2,035) and Ludhiana third. Moga has the lowest tests per million at 414. The number of tests per million population (on the basis of seven-day average) was 2,772 on July 8 and fell to 2,337 by July 15 before further dropping to the recent value.

The health experts, meanwhile, say the authorities must use the time before the probable third wave to ramp up infrastructure to avoid mistakes of the second peak. As per the health department data, 98 cases were logged between July 11 and July 17. The figure was the same in the preceding week (July 4 to 10) as well. However, in the week before it (between June 27 and July 3), the number was 167, which is 41.3% more. The number of cases was 256 from June 20 to 26; 449 from June 13 to 19; 901 between June 6 and 12; and 1,658 during May 30 to June 5.

LUDHIANA: The district has recorded the lowest weekly Covid casualty count in the past one year. One death was reported from July 2 to July 8, according to the state health department report. The count was 83.3% more in the preceding week (June 25 to July 1), when the disease claimed six lives. Eleven residents succumbed to the virus between June 18 and 24; 17 between June 11 and 17; 41 from June 4 to 10; 68 from May 28 to June 3; 131 between May 21 and 27; 151 during May 14 to 20; record 174 from May 7 to 13. On the state chart in weekly Covid fatality figure, Ludhiana shares 17th spot with Tarn Taran, Patiala and SBS Nagar. Mansa is at the top with 13 deaths, Bathinda is second (8) and Amritsar and Hoshiarpur third (7). No deaths were reported from Ropar and Barnala.

LUDHIANA: After more than a year, active cases in Ludhiana have fallen below the 200-mark. As per the state media bulletin, the number of active cases in the district was 197 on Wednesday. The second lowest count, in the period, was on October 26 last, when the figure was 208. There were 328 active cases on July 1; 306 on July 2; 282 on July 3; 255 on July 4; 223 on July 5; and 210 on July 6. In the previous month, the active cases fell from 3,916 on June 1 to 326 on June 30. The highest number of active cases (3,867) during the first wave was recorded on August 22 last. In the second wave, record 13,217 active cases were logged on May 16.
