Republic Services to Pull Expansion Permit Request Apr 30, 2021 at 04:45 am by WGNS
Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron says conversations with Republic Services about its request to expand Middle Point Landfill appears to have resulted in Republic agreeing to pull the request with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation:
Firms Bid To Recycle Waste
During a recent WGNS broadcast, Ketron said that the county had received proposals from nine companies who are interested in managing waste and recycling some of that waste into a viable product. By the way, Republic is one of those who made a proposal.
County Mayor Ketron is adamant about fair and consistent review of all proposals. For this reason and out of respect for the ongoing review process, Republic Services reportedly committed to not filing for the next step in the TDEC (Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation) expansion application process.

Republic Services, which owns Middle Point Landfill in Walter Hill, sent a letter to Rutherford County officials Friday stating the company will put a pause on its state application to expand the facility.
In an interview Thursday, Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron told The Daily News Journal the company would be withdrawing the application submitted to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation April 12. The expansion would add 99.45 acres to the current 207.3-acre disposal area.
The application is not being withdrawn, according to Friday s letter from Middle Point General Manager Michael Classen on behalf of the Phoenix-based solid waste company. The initial application is the first step in a two-part process and TDEC must respond within 30 days.
Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron must pay a $135,000 penalty for 474 campaign finance law violations that the Tennessee Registry of Election Finance found in a series of audits.
The Registry voted last Wednesday to assess the penalty, as well as drop $80,000 in previously announced fines for missing deadlines to file campaign finance reports.
Three audits of Ketronâs campaign accounts for state senator, county mayor and Quest Political Action Committee were conducted last year at the request of Rutherford County Commissioner Robert Stevens.
The civil penalty total was calculated by assessing a $45,000 penalty against each of the three campaign accounts.
The county mayoral account civil penalty will have to be paid before Ketron runs for re-election next February. Ketron said he doesnât plan to return to the state senate.
