EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE Thursday was a historic day for Okaloosa County and Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport as it was announced that a partnership had been forged with Southwest Airlines that should prove beneficial to visitors and travelers alike.
It was an equally monumental day for veteran Southwest pilot Casey Murray, who was granted the honor of landing the first plane bearing the Southwest logo at his hometown airport. I ve lived here for 26 years. I m a product of Fort Walton Beach, Murray said. I wanted to be the one to say it was my wheels that touched down here first.

All of these teams have tremendous talents that show there are quality players outside of the ACC. Hereâs one player from every team worth watching. Note itâs not necessarily their best player, but someone who over the course of the year or their career has made an impression.
Air Force, Quentin Carlile, Jr., D He has an uncanny ability to knock down passes, and he brings it when the spotlight is brightest like last week vs. Richmond (5GB, 5CT), vs. High Point (3GB, 3CT), or at Duke (5GB, 2CT).
Army, Marcus Hudgins, Jr., D An opposing coach earlier in the year told me, âI knew he was good. I didnât realize he was that good.â He erases top matchups at close, played LSM earlier in his career, and will be one of the top defenders in the country by the time he finishes his four years.

Three months ago, it was anyone’s guess just how much of a college lacrosse season there would be.
College football schedules were snarled, especially the deeper things went into autumn. College basketball was every bit a mixed bag, with even eventual national champ Baylor enduring an extended late-season pause.
Denver coach Bill Tierney had the Pioneers open Jan. 30 against Utah, figuring there was bound to be a postponement somewhere and it would be wise to get games in when he could. Denver had one pandemic-related postponement (at Villanova) but made it up last week to close out Big East play.
Denver players had to sit in the stands in the season opener to adequately social distance.

Bill Tierney has seen a lot.
You’re bound to when your coaching career began in 1976 at Great Neck South High on Long Island. But nothing in the intervening 45 years during which Tierney has reached the height of his profession several times over not the seven NCAA Division I championships, the nine title game appearances or the 15 final four berths as a head coach prepared him for when he looked up into the stands of Denver’s Peter Barton Stadium on Jan. 30 after the longest offseason he’s ever experienced.
