EDITORIAL British Gas engineers deserve every support in their fight against fire-and-rehire

British Gas workers outside the headquarters of Centrica in Windsor, Berkshire THE privately owned corporation British Gas is pressing ahead with a scandalous scheme to sack its gas engineers who have put up a sustained resistance to a forced 15 per cent pay cut and radical changes to their terms and conditions. Last month these engineers were given a noon deadline to sign up to new conditions or face sacking.  The reaction of the workers and their union GMB was to take strike action, and the workers have engaged in an eyecatching and innovative propaganda campaign that puts the pressure on the company boss now nicknamed “No Way O’Shea.”

British Gas fire fight isn t over

BRITISH GAS is set to sack thousands of workers on Wednesday as part of a nationwide attack on pay and working conditions, with staff ready to strike in response. The firm has torn up the contracts of engineers and office staff and pushed them to sign replacements which reportedly impose 15 per cent pay cuts and other detrimental changes. To coincide with the firm’s deadline for the mass sacking of engineers in the dispute, Wednesday is also the 43rd day of strike action by members of general union GMB, which said that thousands “have refused to be bullied” into signing the new contracts.

Writing in Nutrients, researchers from Hitachi General Hospital and the University of Tsukuba pointed out that there was no reduction in muscle injury biomarkers or improvement in muscle mass despite HMB supplementation for two weeks.    However, they also pointed out that past studies have shown that long-term HMB supplementation ranging from 12 to 48 weeks could produce beneficial results, such as muscle mass gain in healthy elderly.
