In an Instagram post, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she got ready by torchlight due to a large power outage affecting her central Auckland suburb.
Fong had the idea for the startup during the Covid-19 Level 4 lockdown last year, when many retailers were forced to close while supermarkets kept their doors open. “I love food so I normally shop at a few different places. Plus I grew up in Hong Kong, where our habits are normally just to go to the local market every day and buy what you need for the evening. “My childhood was a lot of after school hanging around markets, speaking to vegetable sellers and making friends with them,” she said. This Local Piggy enabled customers to order items from local food and drink retailers through the website, which would then be delivered. Current sellers included Grey Lynn Butchers, Kōkako Coffee (Mt Eden), JHC Fruit and Vege (Grafton), and Morningside Urban Market Garden.
