This new kitchen in a Mt Eden home teams whitewashed quarter-cut oak veneer with painted V-grooved MDF, which provides a link with the existing tongue-and-groove panelling elsewhere in the house.
Top chefs don’t just inspire us with their brilliant cooking – sometimes their kitchens can also spark a desire for change. And it was Auckland chef Josh Emett’s kitchen, with its warm timbers and beautiful benchtops, that provided the first inspiration for this project by designer Gunnar Friese of Hewe Kitchens and Interiors. But the designer says when he visited his client’s house in Mt Eden, Auckland, it became clear the new kitchen would also need to feature a tongue-and-groove pattern somewhere, as the existing house has tongue-and-groove details in entrance and living areas.

Where is your favourite place in Auckland to go for breakfast/brunch?
Amano in Britomart. They re consistent, the bakery is fabulous, and you know what you re going to get - you can guarantee you re going to get fed well and consistently. The staff and the food are top level. My favourite is kingfish and I always ask for their raw dish.
