I had a great life. Had eight great children, a great husband. I don t think anyone could have had a better life. -Joan Winslow The incredible life of Joan Gallehr Winslow concluded on January 26, 2021. Although her roots were in New York, she created a full life and home in Mechanicsville, Maryland. She effortlessly juggled many roles throughout her life, including wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, writer, journalist, artist, performer, musician, and teacher. She lived an unconventional life. After being told she had to marry a Catholic and couldn t have children, she married a wonderful Methodist man and had 8 healthy children. She made her home filled with love and painted it top to bottom in snowmen, butterflies, and penguins, even adding a yellow brick road in the yard. Everyone knew the door was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay, an ear to listen, or just a hug.

Why are crawfish prices so high in Terrebonne and Lafourche

Tim Angelette of Seafood Outlet in Thibodaux says he has never seen crawfish prices this high.  The combination of the late hurricanes devastating the western part of the state –  home to lots of crawfish farms – and a few days of temperatures in the 30s has the price of mudbugs locally anywhere from $4 to $4.50 a pound live and $6.50 to $8.50 a pound boiled.  “I have sold crawfish for 37 years, been in business since 1984, and this is the highest prices I have ever seen for crawfish in my life,” Angelette said. “The prices have dropped some, but you can never predict the crawfish. Usually, when Lent and Good Friday are late in the year, crawfish season is late in the year.”

Boating, fishing piers to be built in Pointe-aux-Chenes

Construction has begun on seven piers in the Pointe-aux-Chenes area announced by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Construction began Jan. 11 and is expected to last until early to mid August, said Vaughan McDonald, biologist manager of the department s Coastal Lafayette Region. The cost of the project is $2.5 million, which came from the BP oil spill settlement, he said. “It’s basically to reimburse the people of the state for the loss of their recreation because of the spill,” McDonald said. Three of the piers are on La. 665, two are on Island Road and two are in the town of Montegut. Construction of the piers will be done in phases.
