Several Siouxland communities heading to the polls for Special Elections (KTIV) - Today several Siouxland communities will be heading to the voting booths as part of special elections across the state of Iowa. Monona County In Monona County, voters will decide on several important measures. Officials with the Monona County Jail, in Onawa, are hoping a $6.2 million bond vote will pass for a new jail project. The project would replace the current 12-bed facility built back in 1976. The new jail would house up to 32 inmates, with the possibility of expanding to holding 66 inmates. Last March the bond vote received 57 approval from voters, 3 percent short of the required level to pass.

Credit Associated Press Some spots in Iowa and Nebraska are digging out from more than a foot of snow. The National Weather Service reports 5.7 inches fell at the Sioux Gateway Airport. Current reports show Norfolk, Nebraska with the highest total in Siouxland with more than 7 inches. But, some area only received very little snow.   Several schools started late or canceled all together, including Sioux City and South Sioux City. Some services locally are impacted with garbage collection delayed for one day and Sioux City Transit will only be traveling on Priority One streets until further notice. Omaha saw the biggest daily snowfall since 1975 for the 7th day for snow on record.

SPM NEWS 1.25.21 - 4:32PM A major winter storm is expected to blanket a large section of the middle of the U.S with snow and travel troubles as more than a foot of snow falls in some areas, including western Iowa and southeast Nebraska. SPM NEWS 1.14.20 - 3:04PM Siouxland is gearing up for the second Blizzard Warning in three weeks.  The warning starts tonight at 6 and extends until 6 p.m. tomorrow.  The forecast calls for 3 to 8 inches by tomorrow afternoon, with wind gusts as high as 60 miles per hour. On social media, the National Weather Service says the severity of the storm will depend on how much snow falls. If we see more than an inch on the group with additional blowing snow, conditions will be more significant, especially for portions of Iowa and Minnesota. Nebraska voters could get to decide whether to restrict local government spending next year under Gov. Pete Ricketts’ new property tax proposal that he presented to lawmakers during his state of the state address today.
