The Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing Tuesday, April 27 at the Courthouse Boardroom in Emmetsburg for the designation of the expanded Palo Alto County Industrial Park Urban Renewal Area and on the urban renewal plan amendment. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the meeting was also available telephonically.
“We are adding the area where we are building the Palo Alto County Public Safety Center and we are putting that property into our Urban Renewal Area,” said Carmen Moser, Palo Alto County Auditor. “The rest is for all the roads and bridges projects our county engineer will complete. We will be using tax increment financing (TIF) money, which is a funding source for us to use from the new valuation from our wind turbines”

Several Siouxland communities heading to the polls for Special Elections
(KTIV) - Today several Siouxland communities will be heading to the voting booths as part of special elections across the state of Iowa.
Monona County
In Monona County, voters will decide on several important measures. Officials with the Monona County Jail, in Onawa, are hoping a $6.2 million bond vote will pass for a new jail project.
The project would replace the current 12-bed facility built back in 1976. The new jail would house up to 32 inmates, with the possibility of expanding to holding 66 inmates.
Last March the bond vote received 57 approval from voters, 3 percent short of the required level to pass.

To the Editor:
I am asking for the citizens of Palo Alto County to support the upcoming bond referendum for the new Palo Alto County Public Safety Center. I have worked for the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office since July 2005. Over that time period, there has been a lot of changes at the Sheriff’s Office. One thing however remains the same, the current structure housing the Jail, Communication Center, and the Sheriff’s Office.
The original Jail was built in 1908 and is very outdated and not a safe environment for the inmates it houses. The current jail, has conduit exposed, water lines exposed, and radiators in the cells. All of these things, along with actual bars, create a number of concerns for our inmates. Over the years we have had conduit pulled down, water lines ripped down, and even a radiator pulled off of the wall. All of these things create hazards and potential liabilities for the count
